On Deposit: The Guano Story

June 14 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm

For centuries the bird droppings on the Chincha Islands off Peru piled up until they reached massive proportions. This treasure trove of natural fertilizer was “discovered” in 1840 and carried by ship to replenish the tired farms fields of Europe and America. Hundreds of vessels gathered at these islands, loading the nitrogen-rich bonanza of what was then thought to be an inexhaustible supply. The guano trade made fortunes for many and was even an important factor in the extraterritorial expansion of the United States. But in just over a quarter of a century, this “inexhaustible supply” was mined out and the trade faded into history – almost! This talk describes the fascinating ecological factors behind these massive deposits, the story of the guano trade from the 19th century to the present and draws parallels to how we are dealing with our environment today.
